Women 4 Women – New Sessions

During 2015 – 2017, Inter Madrassah Organisation in Blackburn addressed the emotional health needs of BME women in Blackburn with Darwen through a community based engagement project, Women 4 Women (W4W). Due to the growing success of the previous Women 4 Women sessions, IMO are pleased to announce the sessions will be resuming from October 2018! Through W4W on a weekly basis, IMO supports women to discover new skills, make friends, empower one another while emphasising positive activities in a friendly, supportive and welcoming environment.

The sessions delivered are based around peer support and the five ways to well-being. With activity led sessions, IMO aim to deliver the sessions for women aged 19+ from the BME community who feel isolated, stressed, low moods and suffering from other forms of mental health conditions.

Research has shown that South Asian women in Lancashire underutilise health services. IMO recognises the implications of successful services, adequately meeting cultural and religious needs. Did you know in the UK, 1 in 4 people experience mental health difficulties? Research suggests that people of an ethnic minority background are at a higher risk. IMO provides the support needed to manage an existing mental health problem, which could help prevent future periods of ill health. The aim of the sessions delivered through Women 4 Women is engaging women who have mild to moderate emotional health problems, providing them with support, as well as encouraging access to other services.

So far, over 200 women have participated in regular peer group sessions, taking part in activities such as arts and crafts, baking, cooking, aerobics, make – up, photography and nature walks. Women have found the sessions friendly and supportive and felt encouraged sharing their feelings and experiences in a safe and welcoming environment.
