At IMO we believe that Sports and Recreational activities can have a huge impact on the health and wellbeing of everyone involved. In Blackburn with Darwen, there are currently many health issues affecting young people and adults, these being obesity, diabetes, mental health, and poor oral hygiene. The life expectancy is also lower than the England average.

The aim of the Sports and Recreation strand is to promote better health locally by organising weekly, affordable, sport sessions such as:

  • Football
  • Cricket
  • Girls Multi Skills Club
  • Archery
  • Netball

These sessions are planned and run by qualified coaches and a large group of volunteers. We work in partnership with local schools to deliver these sports and as such have built up an excellent working relationship with Primary and Secondary schools across the borough.

In the past, the Sports and Recreation strand has organised tournaments, Summer Camps, trips to sporting venues, and also taken part in the annual Street Games initiative.

All activities on offer share a common goal – to provide a fun environment not only to improve the health of young people and adults but to also assist in developing transferable life skills and promote teamwork within all participants.
